A campus is a private utility network that grew for a century under separate facilities directors, and the record of it lives partly in drawings, partly in a filing cabinet, and partly in the memory of someone who retired.
Every project on that ground carries the risk of hitting something undocumented. Meanwhile the distribution system loses water somewhere between the plant and the buildings, and the electrical rooms serving residence halls and labs have to keep running through a semester that does not tolerate an outage.

Questions we hear from universities & campuses
Why does 811 not cover our campus?
Because past the meters, the network is yours. One-call members mark their own lines up to the service points; the steam, chilled water, power, water and communications crossing the campus are private, and get marked only if someone locates them.
Can work happen around the academic calendar?
That is the normal arrangement. Electrical scans during breaks, locating scheduled around events, and surveys timed so findings arrive when facilities can act on them rather than mid-semester.
Can you help build a record of what is underground?
Yes. Each locate can be compiled into drawings, so the campus record improves project by project instead of living in a retired supervisor's memory.
