Smoke Pencil Testing – Visualize Air Leakage in Real Time
Smoke pencil testing is a fast, effective, and affordable method for identifying air leakage through the building envelope. In accordance with ASTM E1186, this technique uses visible smoke to trace airflow and pinpoint leakage points across seams, penetrations, and construction transitions.
What Is a Smoke Pencil Test?
A smoke pencil releases a thin, controlled stream of visible vapor. When used with natural or induced pressure differentials—such as those created by negative or positive air pressure, it visually reveals air movement through gaps in the air barrier system.
Ideal Applications
- Window and door perimeters
- Roof-to-wall and wall-to-slab transitions
- Electrical and mechanical penetrations
- Expansion joints and curtain wall interfaces
- AVB (Air/Vapor Barrier) seams and terminations (chamber testing)
Benefits of Smoke Pencil Testing
- Quick and cost-effective air leakage identification
- Highly visual – see the air leaks in real time
- Portable – ideal for spot checks during construction
- Non-destructive – no damage to membranes or finishes
- ASTM E1186-compliant – supports energy code and commissioning compliance
Our Testing Process
- Evaluate pressure conditions (natural or fan-induced)
- Apply smoke to critical building transitions
- Observe smoke behavior to identify leakage
- Mark leak locations for repair
- Re-test post-repair to confirm sealing
- Deliver final report with annotated photographs
Equipment & Compliance
- Handheld, non-toxic smoke pencils
- Optional air chamber systems for enhanced testing
- Fully compliant with ASTM E1186 and local energy codes
