Bubble Gun Testing – ASTM E1186 Compliant Air Barrier Leak Detection
Air leakage through air/vapor barriers (AVBs) can significantly reduce a building’s energy efficiency and long-term performance. Bubble gun testing, as described in ASTM E1186, is a highly effective, visual method for detecting membrane defects—before finishes or cladding conceal them.
What Is Bubble Gun Testing?
Bubble gun testing, in accordance with ASTM E1186, uses controlled air pressure and a soap-based solution to identify breaches in air barrier systems. At Atlantic Testing Services, we utilize the PosiTest® Air Leak Tester, which creates a localized depressurized zone on the exterior surface of the AVB.
Once a biodegradable surfactant solution is applied to the membrane, the PosiTest device draws air from the test area. If any leaks or pinholes are present, interior air escapes through the membrane and forms visible soap bubbles—making even the smallest defects easy to detect in real time.
Why Choose Bubble Gun Testing?
- Instant, visible detection of air leaks and membrane flaws
- Compatible with fluid-applied and sheet AVB systems
- Non-invasive and safe for use in active or occupied buildings
- Highly effective for identifying fastener penetrations, trowel skips, and detailing issues
- Supports compliance with ASTM E1186, ABAA standards, manufacturer warranties, and energy codes
Our Testing Process
- Site Setup – Confirm AVB is fully cured, exposed, and accessible
- Surface Preparation – Apply biodegradable surfactant (bubble solution) to target zones
- PosiTest Application – Use the PosiTest Air Leak Tester to create localized depressurization
- Leak Detection – Observe formation of bubbles at leakage points
- Documentation – Mark and photograph all detected leaks in real time
- Re-Test – After repairs, re-test areas to confirm effective sealing
- Final Reporting – Provide a detailed report with annotated images and pass/fail summary
Ideal Applications
- AVB installations over concrete, CMU, or sheathing (Gypson/Fiberglass Panels)
- High-risk transition zones (e.g., curtain walls, expansion joints, penetrations)
- Projects exposed to challenging conditions (cold, humidity, wind)
- QA/QC inspections for LEED, Passive House, or energy code compliance
Equipment & Standards
- PosiTest® Air Leak Tester – for localized, ASTM-compliant testing
- Biodegradable bubble solution – safe, non-toxic surfactant
- ASTM E1186-compliant procedures – meeting industry, manufacturer, and code standards
