Adhesion Pull-Off Testing – ASTM D4541 for Air/Vapor Barriers

Atlantic Testing Services performs adhesion pull testing on air and vapor barrier (AVB) systems using the PosiTest® AT-M. This test is conducted in accordance with ASTM D4541, the standard method for measuring the tensile adhesion strength of coatings and membranes applied to a substrate.

Whether for quality assurance, warranty verification, or code compliance, adhesion testing provides objective, field-verifiable data on the performance of air barrier installations.

What Is Adhesion Pull Testing?

ASTM D4541 defines the procedure for measuring the pull strength of a membrane by bonding a test dolly to the AVB surface using a high-strength adhesive. Once cured, the dolly is pulled perpendicular to the surface using the PosiTest AT-M, a manual hydraulic adhesion tester that delivers highly accurate, repeatable results without the need for electricity or batteries.

The test continues until the dolly detaches or a specified pressure threshold is reached. The result is recorded in psi (pounds per square inch) and includes the failure mode:

  • Adhesive failure (between layers or materials)
  • Cohesive failure (within the membrane or substrate)
  • Substrate failure (e.g., pull-out from CMU, Concrete, Gypson/Fiberglass Panels)

Why Adhesion Testing Matters

  • Ensures membrane bonding strength meets manufacturer and project requirements
  • Verifies installation quality before covering the AVB with insulation or cladding
  • Supports warranty documentation for air barrier system manufacturers
  • Complies with energy codes, ABAA requirements, and building commissioning protocols
  • Detects weak bonds caused by improper substrate prep, moisture, or cold-weather application

Our Testing Process

  1. Site Evaluation – Confirm AVB is fully cured and accessible
  2. Dolly Preparation – Bond test dolly to AVB using appropriate adhesive
  3. Cure Time – Allow appropriate cure time (depending on product and conditions)
  4. Pull Test – Use the PosiTest AT-M to apply perpendicular force to the dolly
  5. Data Collection – Record peak pressure and document failure mode (adhesive, cohesive, substrate) Record dry membrane thickness using manual or digital gauge.
  6. Reporting – Provide a detailed report with results, photos, and field notes for each location.

Equipment & Standards

  • PosiTest® AT-M – precision manual hydraulic adhesion tester
  • ASTM D4541 – Standard Test Method for Pull-Off Strength of Coatings Using Portable Adhesion Testers
  • Compatible with most AVB systems, including fluid-applied, sheet, and spray-applied membranes
  • Optional elevated or cold-weather testing with jobsite-specific cure monitoring

Ideal Use Cases

  • AVB system inspections for commercial buildings, schools, and high-performance enclosures
  • Submittals for LEED, Passive House, or commissioning documentation
  • Installation verification during and after AVB application
  • Manufacturer-required adhesion testing for warranty approval
